The name

Named for the
kingfisher.

Kōtare is the Māori name for the sacred kingfisher — a sudden flash of turquoise and gold that hunts along New Zealand's rivers and tidal arms.

A patient bird that knows the value of a still place to wait, and a good view of the water.

Riverhead sits where the Rangitōpuni Stream meets the upper Waitematā — kōtare country. The house borrows the bird's character: calm, unhurried, turned toward the light. Inside, that becomes deep teal, warm timber and a quiet that you feel the moment the door closes.

Karen & Bruce — “A special shoutout to Louie, who was the highlight of our girls weekend whenever he appeared for pats.” · Grace, November 2025

Your hosts

Meet Karen
& Bruce.

Passionate educators, keen gardeners and proud grandparents, Karen and Bruce live right on site — sharing what they call their “Riverhead slice of paradise” with the guests next door, along with Louie the golden retriever and Bonnie the cat.

By day Karen teaches the performing arts at a primary school; the same warmth runs through how the two of them host. They're around whenever you need them — and as the listing promises, you'll see as much or as little of them as you wish.

  • Breakfast, set out for you — homemade muesli, fresh fruit, bread & spreads
  • Your dishes, taken care of — during your whole stay
  • Wedding-day flexible — early check-ins & late check-outs where they can
  • That extra mile — one guest's forgotten item was posted home “without question”
“I can't speak highly enough of Karen and Bruce, they were so lovely and went above and beyond to see that our stay was perfect.”
